Gunvor’s Lookin’ for Some Hot Stuff, Baby
The nation’s energy-focused PE firms may have found a hot market to make lucrative natural gas exits. But when it comes to global commodities trader Gunvor Group, expanding its natural gas strategy and asset portfolio is proving hotter than a firecracker in August. Not just in its trading sphere, but in U.S. shale gas acquisitions and investments.
Reese Energy Consulting today is following the latest from Switzerland-based Gunvor, which has largely kept its broadened gas strategy undercover. The firm in 2024 reported a 42% stake in Okla.-based Flywheel Energy with marketing rights of 500 MMCFD of natural gas, marking its entry into U.S. gas production. Then came an announcement in 2025 to seek out more shale gas investments and expand its gas footprint.
Fast forward to June this year when Gunvor revealed its leap the month before into Acquisition Town. That Town lies fat and happy in the Haynesville, a bull frog’s jump to the Gulf. In a $300 million deal structured as initial capital, Okla. City-based Western Natural Resources will continue to go forth and produce the natural gas that feeds growing demand for LNG, power, and residential and commercial markets.
The Haynesville may well be a seductress for Gunvor, now said to be in talks with Dallas-based Silver Hill Energy Partners to acquire its gas assets for as much as $1.5 billion. Should a handshake seal a deal, Western Natural Resources would operate the whole kit and kaboodle.
