Reese Energy Consulting today is studying the use of drones to ensure the integrity of our nation’s pipelines. While aerial platforms have been used for some time to record ground data, Colorado-based SolSpec is working to develop a way to fly drones or even small airplanes for longer distances and inspect hundreds of miles of pipelines in a single pass. SolSpec and a handful of competitors are now in a footrace to marry drone technology with infrared cameras to detect methane leaks from the air. This means “walking the line” or boots-on-the ground patrolling soon could become a thing of the past. The company also says it’s launching drones to help midstream firms locate the best locations to lay pipelines. Let us know what you think.
